Shots Ring Out in Garrick Laan

At 11.30pm on Tuesday 6 March residents in a building complex in Garrick Laan were rudely awakened by the sound of small calibre shots.  The shots, fired from the direction of two adjoining properties in Kingfisher Street, extinguished three of the five security lights, littering the walkway with shards of glass and plastic.

With a car in the complex having been broken into on Sunday night, St Lucia Police were notified immediately and dispatched to the scene in good time.  The crime scene was photographed, statements were taken and the area patrolled but the Police failed to enter the two neighbouring properties from which the shots had been fired, although they agreed that the shots had originated from there.  One resident with some military background recognised the sound of the shots as belonging to either an air rifle or a .22 calibre weapon, and I myself witnessed the last of the lights being shot.
Unfortunately no suspects were apprehended but a criminal case has been opened and handed over to Mtubatuba CID for further investigation.

On inspection of the damage during daylight hours, the maintenance men brought to the residents' attention that two of the numerous bullet/pellet holes in one light fitting were old, leading them to the conclusion that last night was not the first time such an event had taken place.

If anybody in the St Lucia Community saw or heard anything, you are urged to contact St Lucia Police on 035 590 1221 and quote crime reference number 286 3/2012.
