St Lucians standing together

As most readers of this site are aware, St Lucia News was created not only to report the goings-on in our town but also to help create a sense of community in St Lucia. We believe that this is achieved through publicising events organised by St Lucians & held in St Lucia and by recognising individuals' attempts at forging a community spirit within the borders of our beautiful town.

All St Lucians are by now aware of St Lucia X Factor and the campaigns initiated by this group, including raising funds to build a statue of Vincent the hippo and the Rhino Cross campaign launched late last year which gained a great deal of media coverage country-wide. St Lucia X Factor's board of representatives consists of a number of St Lucians, both longtime residents and newcomers, with one goal: to create a community spirit in St Lucia through community projects and campaigns. Apart from this group, recent weeks have seen the launch of St Lucia's Biggest Loser, a healthy living campaign which requires a three month committment from participants and helps people lead a healthier life; as well as Candace Edgar shave her head in the name of charity. CANSA Shavathon was at the Advantage Office in early March and Candace pledged to shave her head completely if she reached her target of R5000. She had this to say: "Im proud of the town and amazed at how quickly they contributed to the cause." During the same weekend, Melissa Marnitz cut her hair to honour her pledge and other St Lucians dyed theirs. CANSA Shavathon is held annually and is a chance for participants to show solidarity with those affected by cancer. This event was particularly pertinent to St Lucia this year after Cenessa Stork, long time St Lucia resident and news reporter with the Zululand Observer, sadly lost her battle against cancer in February.

St Lucia News wishes to recognise and commend the efforts of the many St Lucians standing together and helping to create a community spirit in our town.
