Blood donations help save Hluhluwe farmer's life

Members of the St Lucia Community will by now be aware of the brutal attack on Peter-John Hassard, conservationist and farmer, at his Hluhluwe farm on Monday 20 May. Hassard was reportedly attacked and shot by five black male gunmen as he was leaving his farmhouse. In a critical condition he drove himself to a local hospital where he has been fighting for his life since the attack.

After reports from the family of Hassard urgently requiring blood, family, friends and members of the public eagerly stepped in and donated their blood. Having received the required amount of O negative blood, Peter-John is reportedly doing much better today.

Peter-John Hassard helps run Silvasands Safaris, the family farm and wildlife business, with his father Peter Hassard. The 22 500 acre farm has been in the Hassard family since 1915 and is a tourist destination for wildlife enthusiasts and hunters from around the world. This farm attack is not thought to be another statistic in the ever increasing rhino poaching pandemic that is sweeping our country. Hassard's attackers are thought to be 'outsiders' and the local farming community has launched a search party in conjunction with SAPS.
