In the early hours of Tuesday morning, 25 June, an armed suspect who had broken in to one of the chalets in Sodwana Bay Resort was shot and killed by a KZN Wildlife Field Ranger.
Whilst on patrol the Field Ranger received information about the break in and made his way to the chalet in question.
After stealing a wallet, two cell phones and car keys belonging to guests, the suspect left the chalet and was immediately confronted by the Field Ranger. The suspect allegedly pointed his 9mm firearm at the Field Ranger who reacted by firing his weapon. The suspect died as a result of the shooting. SAPS was called to the scene where they carried out their investigation.
Not much more can be said while the police investigation is active, however, Agriculture & Environmental Affairs MEC, Meshack Radebe, has stated that the Field Ranger would have been killed had he not reacted as reported. The identity of the deceased has been withheld until his immediate family has been notified.
KZN Wildlife CEO, Dr Bandile Mkhize, said in a statement that "The crime in the area does not only affect Ezemvelo but also affect[s] all the surrounding businesses including the informal traders".
The recent spate of criminal activities in the Sodwana Bay Resort, aimed at the resort's guests, has resulted in the deployment of additional Field Rangers by KZN Wildlife. The presence of these additional Field Rangers in Sodwana Bay Resort has, according to a KZN Wildlife press release, "managed to reduce the level of criminal activities" in the area.
