Sponsor a Cross to Help Save our Rhinos

Over 600 white wooden crosses line the road leading to St Lucia; a visual statement and reminder of a subject close to all of our hearts, yet one whose support could be in danger of losing momentum the longer the slaughter of South Africa's rhino population continues.

A collaboration between St Lucia X Factor and Project Rhino KZN, the total number of crosses on display equals, sadly, the total reported number of rhinos poached in South Africa to date; an accompanying sign clearly showing the dramatic escalation experienced during 2012.

The materials for this project were donated and, following some initial confusion as to the reason for the crosses, a signboard was painted and erected amongst the crosses. This project was carefully timed to coincide with year-end in order to accurately depict the total number of rhino poached in South Africa during the year. The plan going forward is to add crosses to this year's total as the number increases in 2013. Hopefully, however, in light of recent success in securing air patrols over northern KZN game reserves for a few years to come, the crosses being made and erected will be at a slower rate than in 2012. The idea behind the rhino crosses? To make a visual impact and heighten awareness of our tragic poaching situation.

Any willing party, be it individuals or businesses, can sponsor a cross for R100. Funds raised will go to the Project Rhino air surveillance team; the 'eye in the sky' over northern KZN.

For more information on sponsoring a cross, contact Candace Edgar on candace.edgar15
