On Tuesday, 10 July, approximately 200 people took to the streets in Durban's first Rhino March. The march took place in Durban's City Centre, starting at the Christian Centre and ending at the City Hall. A modest crowd, however, the time and place of this march was a tactical decision, aimed at coinciding with the International Wildlife Management Congress, which took place at Durban's International Conference Centre (ICC) this week.
Rhino March organisers' goal for this inaugural event was to simply raise awareness of the movement which was achieved through immense local media coverage. The co-operation from the SAP, whose officers marched alongisde the crowd and blocked off intersections en route, was encouraging and illustrates the authorities' willingness to help highlight the plight of South Africa's rhinos.

A Rhino March spokesperson said they were "delighted at the spirit and determination of our marchers". She also said that KZN Wildlife CEO, Dr Bandile Mkhize, was "impressed by the spirit and resilience of Durban's first Rhino March and has already spoken to East Coast Radio about taking Rhino March to the rest of the province."
