Tributes pouring in from colleagues reveal the sadness and shock surrounding Scott-Shaw's passing, with one colleague describing it as a "huge loss to bio-diversity in South Africa".
Scott-Shaw has left a legacy of scientific achievements, some of which include:
- Bringing proper conservation attention to threatened plants through the publication of his book Rare & Threatened Plants of KwaZulu-Natal and Neighbouring Regions. He also played a key role in producing and updating the South Africa plant Red List.
- The most important contributor from KZN to the national vegetation classification, Scott-Shaw made a massive contribution to the definition and understanding of vegetation types in South Africa.
- On top of his many responsibilities, he was an excellent curator of the Killick Herbarium.
The KwaZulu-Natal wildlife authorities and enthusiasts have indeed lost an integral element to conservation following Scott-Shaw's passing. St Lucia News extends its sympathies to Rob Scott-Shaw's family and many colleagues who mourn his loss.
